251 Résumés en anglais Laura NICOLAE Abstract: Winner of the 2024 Robert-Cliche Award for the First Novel , Rue Escalei positions itself within the landscape of Quebec literature as a work rooted in a hybrid literary lineage. By transcending the story of a small community on the outskirts of Bucharest through the lens of magical realism, the novel pays tribute to the author’s grandparents, a generation deeply scarred by the historical and political upheavals of the twentieth century. Writing such a story in French, while evoking everyday life in 1970s Bucharest, reflects a commitment to a literary and personal heritage. ALVES Abstract: This paper offers an in-depth analysis of Annie Ernaux’s writing as an ethical, political and sociological approach, exploring individual and collective memories that are often weakened, humiliated, or forgotten. The aim of this research is to show how Ernaux, by adopting a singular style of writing that is both distanced and embodied, succeeds in rehabilitating marginalised lives and questioning the structures of social and symbolic domination. Far from narcissistic autofiction, her work is constructed as a critical commitment, in the tradition of Bourdieu and of the involved writer. Her writing aims to give voice to those ‘beneath literature’, in Ernaux’s words, by restoring their memory within a literary space traversed by sociology, history and subjectivity. In her case, writing thus becomes an act of testimony and truth, a tool of resistance against forgetting, shame, and the invisibilization of working-class communities. The common thread running through our approach lies in the will to interweave the intimate and the collective, rejecting literary artifice in favour of a form of sensitive objectivity. By detaching herself from the ‘I’ and adopting ‘we’ or ‘us’, Ernaux gives her narrative a universal scope, offering a shared memory of social history, gender, filiation and inheritance.
