L’intérieur en tant que frontière dans la vie. L’analyse du drame Intérieur de Maurice Maeterlinck Jun MITA Université de Kitasato, Japon mita-svr@kitasato-u.ac.jp Résumé. La relation entre les différents lieux du drame Intérieur (1894) de Maurice Maeterlinck a été comprise comme une dichotomie entre l’intérieur (assimilé à la chambre dans la maison) et l’extérieur (assimilé au jardin). L’analyse du texte permet pourtant de mettre en évidence trois espaces : la maison, le jardin et l’extérieur du terrain qu’ils forment ensemble. Ces espaces représentent respectivement les notions d’intime, d’intérieur, et d’extérieur. Dans Intérieur , le jardin symbolise la frontière (l’intérieur) entre la vie quotidienne (l’extérieur) et la « vie profonde » (l’intime) que Maeterlinck tentait de rendre sensible dans son « théâtre statique ». Nous nous emploierons à montrer l’affinité entre cet « intime » et la notion freudienne de Heimliche aussi bien au niveau linguistique que sémantique. L’« intime dévoilé » qui ébranle les protagonistes dans le drame Intérieur ne serait autre que le Unheimliche , pour lequel nous proposons comme traduction française le mot extime . An Analysis of Maurice Maeterlinck's Drama Interior ). The relation between the different places in Maurice Maeterlinck’s drama Intérieur (1894) has been considered as a dichotomy between the interior (equated with the room in the house) and the exterior (equated with the garden). However, an analysis of the text reveals three spaces: the house, the garden and the exterior of the premises. These spaces represent the notions of intimate, interior and exterior. In Intérieur , the garden symbolises the boundary (the interior) between everyday life (the exterior) and the vie profonde (deep life) (the intimate) which Maeterlinck attempted to make perceptible in his ‘static theatre’. We shall show the affinity between this ‘intimate’ and the Freudian notion of Heimliche , both linguistically and semantically. The ‘unveiled intimacy’ that shakes the protagonists in the drama Intérieur is none other than the Unheimliche (the uncanny), for which we propose the word extime as a French translation. Introduction Cette étude se penche sur le drame Intérieur (1894) de Maurice Maeterlinck (1862-1949), un dramaturge symboliste belge. La pièce se déroule entièrement dans le jardin d’une habitation.
